CAS STUDENT GUIDE 2019/2020 |
CAS OVERVIEW:
CAS is an integral part of the GSIS IB program and must be successfully completed in order to gain the diploma. Students must demonstrate that they have achieved the seven learning outcomes and undertaken activities on a regular basis over a period of 18 months. Students should also be involved in at least one project involving teamwork that integrates two or more of creativity, activity and service.
CAS Requirements at GSIS:
Every CAS student must be involved in at least one CAS project of significant duration. An acceptable project satisfies the following basic requirements:
1. There is evidence of significant planning
2. Involves teamwork and collaboration
3. Integrates two or more of creativity, activity and service
4. Is of sufficient duration, at least one month
5. Has a meaningful result
6. Reflects the process and results
Major Project:
The major CAS project satisfies the basic requirements outline above and also should meet the quality criteria described below.
1. Engages the student in a global issue or meaningful service.
The project has significantly impacted on a social or environment challenge, either locally or internationally. Experiences during the project provide enough time to address identified community needs. A positive impact is made clear when reflecting.
2. Is of significant duration and intensity.
The project should be carried out during concentrated blocks of time across a period of weeks or months. The project also has sufficient intensity and duration to address community needs. Minimum of one month duration.
3. Leadership.
Demonstrated significant leadership in planning and carrying out the project.
Type and scope of Major Project:
The amount of time spent planning the project and the actual time spent carrying out the project should be as much as necessary for the project to be helpful to the targeted group, organisation, school or community. The project can be original or it could be a variation of one already carried out previously. The student must be responsible for planning, directing and following through to its completion.
Before Starting:
Before starting the project it must be approved by the beneficiary of the project, CAS Advisor or CAS coordinator and CAS supervisor. A detailed plan of who will benefit from the project, how they will benefit and details of planning involved must be submitted. Project Form to be completed and added to Managebac.
Carrying out the Project:
We will be using the Managebac recording system at GSIS. Record of plans and progress must be consistently recorded on Managebac. Students should communicate with participants, supervisors and CAS Advisors to make sure actions are having intended consequences.
Upon Completion:
The manner in which the project was carried out must be approved by the beneficiary, CAS Advisor or supervisor. This would be done after reading the students report on the project. Examples of how the project was directed, how plans may have changed.
Students must reflect on their learning throughout the process, photographs and video and many other formats, could be used in reflections. These can be added to Managebac as a detail record of the project.
Summary:
The students CAS project can be as meaningful as they wish to make it. Projects may vary in length and amount of commitment, but none should be trivial. As with all CAS activities, you need to plan, act and reflect on learning
